What is Resin Bound Surfacing?
Resin Bound surfacing is a mixture of aggregate stones and resin used to pave footpaths, driveways, etc. It is a kind of permeable paving solution.
It is a flexible surfacing material, so is resistant to cracking.
The system is mixed on-site and cold applied, using a high-quality clear resin binder to coat the aggregate particles prior to laying. Unlike resin-bonded surfacing, where a thin layer of resin is applied to the surface and then the aggregate scattered on top (which can then become loose over time and is impermeable), resin and aggregates are thoroughly mixed together prior to laying, ensuring that the aggregate is completely coated and so providing a totally bound surface. As a result, a resin-bound surface is more durable and requires less maintenance – it needs to be swept or power washed at least twice a year, to avoid the buildup of detritus and prevent the growth of moss or algae.
Resin-bound paving is a fully permeable paving solution which allows water to freely drain through the surface. Meeting the requirements of Sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) standards, this helps to prevent standing water and largely eliminates surface water runoff.
Why Resin Bound Surfacing is Better Than Resin Bonded Surfacing?
Resin bound surfacing offers several advantages over resin bonded surfacing, making it the superior choice for outdoor spaces.
Permeability:
Resin bound surfacing allows water to drain through, reducing puddles and flooding. Resin bonded surfacing is not permeable, leading to water pooling issues.
Aesthetic Appeal:
Resin bound surfaces provide a smooth, seamless look with encapsulated stones, while resin bonded surfaces have a rougher texture.
Durability:
Resin bound surfaces are highly durable and resistant to cracking, ideal for high-traffic areas. Resin bonded surfaces are more prone to damage and require more maintenance.
Low Maintenance:
The smooth surface of resin bound surfacing is easy to clean and resists weed growth. Resin bonded surfaces can trap dirt and are harder to maintain.
Safety:
Resin bound surfaces have non-slip properties, making them safer in wet conditions. Resin bonded surfaces can be slippery when wet.
Eco-Friendly:
Resin bound surfacing supports sustainable drainage systems, helping manage water runoff. Resin bonded surfaces do not offer these benefits.
Versatility:
Resin bound surfacing is suitable for various applications, offering a wide range of colors and textures. Resin bonded surfaces have fewer design options.
